Driving for better business
Driving for work is one of the highest-risk activities that many employees undertake, whether driving a commercial vehicle, a company car or occasional work journeys in their own vehicle. As the gig economy continues to grow, this also means those who ride for work as well as those who drive. Driving for Better Business is a free to access government-backed National Highways programme, delivered in partnership with RoadSafe, to help employers in the private and public sectors reduce work-related road risk, protecting staff who drive or ride for work, and others who they may share the road with. Our mission is to improve the levels of compliance for all those who drive or ride for work by demonstrating the significant business benefits of managing work-related road risk more effectively. Vans are the fastest-growing class of vehicles in the UK and vans are involved in more killed and severely injured (KSI) incidents than any other class of vehicle on our roads. National Highways and Driving for Better Business produced the Van Driver Toolkit to improve van driver and fleet operator awareness of the basic legal and best-practice requirements to help improve compliance and reduce the number and severity of van incidents on the road network. Its clear, easy to understand collection of 35 modules have reached more than 1,440,000 drivers driving for work.
The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) is an international voluntary accreditation scheme that helps to improve standards across the transport industry. FORS is open to commercial vehicle operators of all types throughout the UK and Europe, providing an accreditation process that covers all aspects of safety, fuel efficiency, economical operations and vehicle emissions. For van operators, there are numerous benefits to becoming FORS accredited. Chief among them is the FORS Professional Van Smart training, a driver training programme that aims to reduce work related road risks, improve safety and enable participating fleets to win more business. The CPC accredited training is fully aligned with CLOCS, and the course allows drivers to claim CPD hours. The comprehensive package includes a manager toolkit, a driver handbook, and a classroom-based course with a practical on-cycle element that allows drivers to experience the road from the point of view of vulnerable road users.
